It's totally moot now, but Bill Simmons tweeted "moss Vikings" a few weeks back, then rescinded the tweet, then explained on Twitter that it was a mistake, and then explained in his Page 2 column what really happened.
Reading this column was actually very interesting - first of all, it's the longest column Bill's ever written that wasn't about Basketball and how to reinvent the sport so that it's one million times more awesome than it's maximum awesomeness could ever sustain right now ever. Second, all the information about the process that ESPN employee's have to go through to report something. Not that I care so much about all the bullshit red tape, I could actually care less, but it was pretty interesting to read about the process.
What I don't buy is Simmons bullshit story about WHY he had mistakenly Tweeted the news of the trade.
It's really cool that he explains how he fucked up in a million different ways. Do I believe he was attempting to DM (Tweet Direct Message - not that I know what the fuck that is, or why anyone would want to use that), yes. I don't buy for a single second that he was sending it to Adam Schefter. No way.
First of all, there's a few Moss's in the league, second, Bill doesn't have Adam's telephone number, so I submit he doesn't know Schefty well enough to set him into some sort of easter egg hunt through the use of two words - "moss Vikings". Like that was going to trigger the information Schefter into investing whether there was a pending trade without asking another question, or if Bill had the time to respond to the possible subsequent questions.
Third, Bill is in a room with ESPN on and off-air employees. He couldn't ask for his number? If he wasn't concerned about breaking the story and taking the limelight himself, why not ask Amadouche Schapp? Why not ask ANYTHING? Say, I have crazy absurdly important news potentially, I can't film your crappy show for 5 minutes, let me come back in a few. That wouldn't have been cool?
I think it's simple - Bill was attempting to DM a friend. Someone he ACTUALLY does know. Someone that would have immediately known to freak out as a Patriots fan and that Bill could have filled in later. Beyond anything, Bill is the kind of guy to have an article written for something in full before it happens so that he can say he expected it rather than be the one who actually breaks the story, which is fine, that's great, and makes his story very plausible. Whoever his source was, he definitely didn't mean to blow up his spot. This wasn't supposed to go public in that manner, and I submit that it wasn't supposed to go to Schefter.
Bill talks about credibility in his article regarding scoops. I don't think of Schefter and think "expert" let alone credible. Today he posted to his Insider blog that the Cowboys are going to look at big-name coaches like Bill Cowher or John Fox in the offseason. That's the safest and most bullshit comment/article/blog ever! Of course if Wade Phillips sucks by this offseason he's gone, and of course Jerry Jones is going to look at a big-name, who else would he look at? Someone mundane and unknown? Not Jerry's style.
Finally, if he's not close enough with Schefty to get his number, why give him the scoop to finalize with additional leg work? Seems like a default scenario he'd assume most people would believe. It's just bullshit though. He tried to send something to his friend. He's in a room full of WWL's, doing an event for the WWL, and he sends via DM a message to Adam Schefter? No - way. You are telling me they don't have corporate email, can't search that through his BlackBerry? Bill Simmons doesn't have an assistant that he could ask if that was his intention? GTFO brah. Thankfully the rest of the article was pretty awesome, I just can't get over the Schefter Red Herring, I can't. It's ridiculous.
