REVIEW: (500) Days of Summer AND Couples Retreat

The last two Netflix'd vid's that BuDaChick and I watched were (500) Days of Summer and Couples Retreat.  Spoiler Alert - one was really awesome, and one was really mediocre.

Couples Retreat has all the (personnel) ingredients for an incredibly hilarious movie, and unfortunately for the viewers, you'll be subjected to sitting through an hour and 47 minutes of a completely un-hilarious pile of predictable crap.  The funniest portion of the movie are two therapists, the hilarious Wayne Jarvis, from DirectTV commercials and Arrested Development, and the Japanese doctor from Knocked Up (also the naked dude from The Hangover, and The King from Role Models).  Beyond those small portions of chuckles, I was supremely bored.  Lucky that Kristin Davis and Bell are hot, bam.

(500) Days of Summer I'd heard was good, but you never know what to expect.  Let me just say that the acting, directing and screenplay was excellent.  Without giving too much away, the director uses this one image to take you through various points of time, and it serves as a masterful starting point for the movies various leaps through time.  The one image is a background of a city and a tree - it changes slightly with the tone of the movie and it becomes very clear where exactly in this tale the director is taking you to.  You are warned in the first 5 minutes of the movie that "...this is not a love story...", so you should find out just how much a hopeless romantic you are throughout the course of this movie.  If you still believe throughout the movie knowing what the narrator tells you, then you are.  If not, well there you go.

(500) Days of Summer in my opinion was a very good movie, incredibly enjoyable, and I thought the acting was engrossing as well.  I wouldn't say she is super hot or anything, but there is something very attractive about Zooey Deschanel.  Best scene of the movie (acting, directing, and from an artistic standpoint) is the "Expectations vs Reality" scene.  Perfect timing, and very engrossing.  Enjoy!
