So CNN had themselves an article about Fear and Loathing in Flex Time. First of all, the "flex time" I'm familiar with is the "we're flexible,, so you won't get paid, but your ass better fucking be here." The flexible time that CNN is talking about doesn't seem so bad. Work from home, so what if you are discriminated against a little bit!
I know all about the fear of not being there. Appearing indispensable doesn't mean you aren't, because you are. No one is indispensable. If your firm is, for instance, Ernst & Young, obviously Mr. Ernst and Mr. Young aren't going anywhere, but if you are reading, you ain't them.
I could rant for days and years on this issue, but being there just to be there doesn't mean you are any more valuable. To the right person, it will appear as though you are inefficient with your work and time. To the wrong person, it appears as though George Costanza is working an 18 hour day because he locked his keys in his car.
In the end it's about management, efficiency and profitability. If a firm is doing well, and run well, it should just be about getting the work done, not putting in a mandatory 20% overtime. If things are bad, then it becomes about clock punching, and mandatory OT. So CNN, shut the fuck up. Work from home. I work at the office til 7 or 8, then work from home for 3 more hours just to get my work done some nights and not be in that hell hole. Work during the day from home, fucking cup cakes. Ridiculous.
