Latest delivery from Netflix was one of the nominee's for Best Picture, and winner of the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay, Up in the Air.
I thought this was an enjoyable movie, but it was obvious why it didn't win best picture. This movie is good but quite mediocre.
The movie stars George Clooney who spends about 320 days of a given year traveling from city to city firing people for a variety of companies. His home is literally "Up in the Air", and it's where he feels most comfortable. He meets Verra Farmiga who also spends much of her time traveling, and they smash. Awesome butt scene of Farmiga.
I can't really describe the plot of the movie without giving the entire movie away, and it's a good enough movie that I won't do that to it. Long story short, Clooney travels with a young upstart co-worker Anna Kendrick (who I kept thinking looks absurdly familiar, just now found out she was from Twilight, HA!) and they begin a period of transition. They meet with Farmiga along the way, and Clooney and Farmiga's relationship develops.
The real reason I wasn't a fan of the movie was because I felt that nothing happened, or that events occurred for seemingly no reason. I enjoyed watching the movie, but I'm not really sure why it was nominated for best picture. It was an enjoyable watch, but I felt that even though things occurred in the movie that the way things began was the way they ended.
For the ladies: You already love Clooney, and 99% of the movie is Clooney. The other 1% is the air that he's up in. Enjoy.
For the homies: Again, Farmiga booty. And it-is-a-gooood. Also, Kendrick is attractive. Slightly annoying as a character. Farmiga and Clooney seem to have chemistry and make a good on camera duo, even though Farmiga's character is rather boring.
Now time for the spoiler chatter.
SPOILER TIME: I guess the portion of the movie where Clooney drops his Dos Equis speech right in the middle of it kind of took me out of the movie. Like, finish the speech, or ad lib and change it up entirely. Instead of emptying the backpack, maybe the new speech is to fill it up. But dude just left. Guh?! Then he pops in on Farmiga at her Chicago townhouse, which obviously was not going to contain just her. Yeah, him walking up I knew the broad was married with children. Then, he goes back out on the road at the end of the movie. Like, great. The video conference project is over, things are back to the way they are, and I guess you are supposed to believe he's changed (his letter for Kendrick), but who knows. I just felt like not a lot happened in the movie. How did Farmiga have this relationship and NEVER call her kids? Really? Like okay, maybe she hates her husband - but she was never on the phone with her kids at all. She went to Clooney's sisters wedding and the whole time they were together. She never checked in?! Balls.
UPDATE: BuDaChick just said to me "I kind of feel like that movie had no ending". Bam.
