Quit Yankin' It in the Post Season

With the NY Yankees having already clinched a playoff spot, and with their magic number for clinching the AL East down to one (1), the 2009 Yankees and the post season play is almost upon us. Beyond the AL East, the Yankees magic number for clinching the top seed in the American League over the LA Angels of Anaheim is also down to one (1). Last year the Yankees didn't make the playoffs with their first year under Joe Girardi, and in previous years they have made first round exits.

Joe Girardi took the job for Manager of the New York Yankees and decided to wear the number 27; slightly pompous, especially since they didn't even make the playoffs last year, but pretty awesome never the less. I am not saying they need to win the World Series this year (although it would be nice), but they need to get their heads right and make a post season of it. I don't like a best out of 3 game series, but the Yankees management has built a team from this past offseason that is meant for the playoffs. Sabathia-Burnett-Pettitte as your 1-2-3, you should have an October sweep. In theory, genius.

In practice, who knows. The Yankees have been built to win - this season, after stumbling a bit in the beginning, have become the team with the most wins in the entire Major League this year. A win tomorrow against Boston would not only secure them the AL East, and top seed in the playoffs, but they would also be the first team to reach 100 wins this season. Including tomorrow's game, the Yankees play 7 more games this season. Then comes the real deal. Yankees (mainly ARod), time to show what's up - do work this post season. With a team salary of just over $208M, you'd think they' be able to at least SHOW UP in the post season. Do it to it Yanks.
