A few things...
The New York Yankees finalize at one year deal with Nick Johnson for $5.75M. He will be the DH and likely bat #2. Last year Johnny Damon batted in the 2-hole. This is ripe for an obvious comparison...
2009 stats for Johnson playing for the Nationals and Marlins: .290 AVG, 8 HR, 62 RBI, .426 OBP, .405 SLG
2009 stats for Damon playing for the Yankees: .282 AVG, 24 HR, 82 RBI, .365 OBP, .489 SLG
Damon wants something in the range of $13+M per year for a minimum of 3 to 4 years. I'd say this is a good deal for the Yankees. They seem to be obviously making moves with the anticipation of left handed bats producing about 50% higher than their 2009 statistics because of the Yankee Stadium jet stream (Curtis Granderson), so we'll see how that plays out. With the acquisitions and signings the Yankees payroll is over $205M. Its highly likely that they will not sign Damon. Since my last post, the Yankees traded Melky Cabrera and Mike Dunn for Javier Vasquez.
Stats for thought: Javier Vasquez's Postseason Statistics:

People remember how bad he was in 2004, but he was worse in 2008. Could be interesting.

Capps to Close for the Nats
