This is unheard of, just unheard of. - Bud Selig, Major League Baseball Press Release
In Game 2 of the World Series, as manager Charlie Manuel came out to relieve Pedro Martinez in the 6th inning, Pedro flipped Charlie Manuel onto his back - Don Zimmer style.
Charlie Manuel said he had no idea what was happening until the paramedics carted him off the field. It appeared as though Pedro Martinez reacted in the same way he reacted in 1999 2003 when he had his infamous "encounter" with Don Zimmer. Pedro gave Charlie Manuel a look as he was coming out of the dugout - what is the most peculiar is that Charlie Manuel was not running or jogging, in fact, the method he used to approach Pedro could barely be described as walking. As Charlie got about 5 feet away from Pedro he took a step back and as Charlie reached out for the ball, he pulled Charlie's head down and flipped him over onto his back.
I've never seen anything like this. Never in a hundred years.
Don Zimmer was quoted as saying such shortly after the incident occurred. There was a 27 minute delay to Game 2 of the World Series, which ended in Charlie Manuel being carted off by paramedics and Pedro Martinez being taken away in the back of a NYPD squad car. There are no reports that either the Philadelphia Phillies or Mr. Manuel be pressing charges. When Charlie Manuel regains the power of speech we may find out more whether there will be any type of lawsuit.
When asked about his future with the club, Phillies owner David Montgomery said, "Well I think that is pretty obvious. We are going to have to part ways. Perhaps when Charlie [Manuel] regains consciousness he will have some say in the matter, but as of now, moving through the series and into the off season we are going to have to look elsewhere."
It will be interesting to see how these events unfold, but for now we can only wait and see.
*NOTE* - These events have not yet occurred although I, the BuDaMan, give them a 99.9% likelihood of occurring. Is there really any other option?
